It was at the International Thespian Society Induction Ceremony that Mr. Luedeke made an exciting announcement regarding his selection of next year’s theme, play, and musical, for Blackhawk’s theatre department. The theme, “Classic with a Twist,” will be carried out through the performances of Nicholas Nickleby and The Wiz.
The fall play is an adaption of Charles Dickens,’ Nicholas Nickleby. A nine-hour adaption of this story was developed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1981. It gained five Tony awards while on Broadway, including Best Play. Our adaption by Tim Kelly will not be nine hours long, but will still follow the same story of a penniless youth and his sister trying to find their way and fortune in Victorian London. Nicholas Nickleby will open October 17, 2013.
In March, Blackhawk will be mounting a stunning production of the 1975 Tony award winner for Best Musical, The Wiz. The Wiz is a Motown version of The Wizard of Oz, with a book by William F. Brown and score by Charlie Smalls. The performances will be held on March 20th through the 22nd. It’s going to be an exciting year for the BCS community as we get to take in these amazing productions!
